Long-distance champions like Derartu Tulu and Kenenisa Bekele, who won a total of five Olympic titles between them, came from the town of Bekoji. She once remarked, “I grew up running with pails of water, going to fetch from the river every day after school to help my mother.”
One of three siblings that have achieved sports success is hers. Her older sister Ejegayehu won a silver medal in the 10,000 m at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, while Genzebe, her younger sister, is the 2015 world champion and holder of the 1,500 m world record.
