The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced a temporary halt to its provision of food aid to Ethiopia, citing the redirection of its supplies. This decision follows a similar move by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) a day prior.

WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The diversion of food resources is completely unacceptable, and we appreciate the Ethiopian government’s commitment to investigating this matter and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.”

Approximately 20 million Ethiopians heavily depend on food assistance due to a combination of drought and conflict, a significant proportion within the country’s total population of around 120 million. A substantial portion of this vital aid is supplied by both USAID and WFP.
