We introduce some of the world's most shocking wedding customs, from the use of French gastro-la-soup and the smashing of German dishes to the post-wedding boycott in Borneo and the weeping women in China.
After the wedding ceremony, some South Korean newlyweds undergo a ceremony before leaving with their new husbands: a leg beating. His groomsman or relatives removed the man's shoes on the spot and tied the bottoms of his feet with rope before taking turns beating his feet with sticks or from time to time with dried fish. While obviously difficult, the habit ends quickly and is considered more enjoyable than a demonstration of discipline, and it is clear - because the men in class are regularly tested and spoken to during demonstrations - hitting the foot rather than a newly married man's test of solidarity and character.
