He returned to Ethiopia in 1966 and instructed at the Addis Abeba School of Fine Arts (later renowned Sounder College of Performing and Visual Arts). Sounder moved to the United States in 1970, where he taught at the Black Art Center in Atlanta and the University of Howard since 1972. When the Civil War began in Ethiopia in 1974, Sounder could no longer return and lived in exile until its Death in 2003.
The Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie dissolved the erytrus Parliament and attached the territory in 1962, and the subsequent Eritrea War for Independence lasted 30 years against the successive Ethiopian governments until 1991, when the Liberation Front of the erythine people finally defeated the Ethiopian forces In Eritrea.
