Some Ethiopian churches, such as Debra Dame (above) and Begum, can be attributed tentatively to the period assumed. These two structures are probably cited until the sixteenth century or later. It is still the century before the 6th century, assumes that churches have not been identified with confidence. However, archaeologists believe that a small number of now ruined structures dating up to the 4th and fifth century functioned as churches, a conclusion based on characteristics as their orientation. A large staggered podium in the compound of the Church of María de Zion in Assumir (considered by Ethiopians as the Housing of the ARCA of the Covenant), probably once gave access to a large church built during this period.
