Some of the temples in the region most likely date from this period, but changes that have occurred due to the inability to obtain permits for direct archaeological investigations make the dating unsettling. Chances are the sacred site will continue to be precisely carved out of rock. The collection of burial hypogea (underground cargo) on the Hokken Plain (northern Ethiopia) may have been altered in temples during this period. This can be the case with temples such as Abreha-ve-Atsbeha (below) and Thermos Munro (the screens in these chapels are likely from a later period). According to oral environmental conventions, some iron crosses date back to a period thought to be or after Aksum, but the lack of a solid dating strategy and the way the cross was carried to the 16th century make this case difficult to verify.
