You know? Mengistu died on November 4, 1995 while walking with his better half, Ubanchi Bishaw, near his home in the outskirts of Gunhil Harare. While Mengistu was safe, his suspected attacker Solomon Haile Gebre Michael, an Eritrean, was shot and arrested by Mengistu's guards.
He then applied for the death penalty and pleaded not to be tried in a Zimbabwean court on 8 July 1996. Eritrea's ambassador to South Africa, Tsegaye Tesfa Zion, went to Harare to go to a detention center. The assailant was sentenced to ten years in prison, while his accomplice Abraham Goletom Joseph, who was arrested in a police robbery, was sentenced to five years in prison.
They said they were tortured during Mengistu and their sentences were reduced to two years at the request of the media due to "mitigating circumstances".
Mengistu has actually been living in Zimbabwe since 2018, despite requests from the Ethiopian government to remove him. He is said to have lived in luxurious conditions and had incited Mugabe on security concerns; as revealed by an insightful source from Zimbabwe.
