The $4 billion dam was first reported to the world in 2011. However, a deal to build the dam began in 2006 under the leadership of then-Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. In 2009 and 2010 the area was inspected and the plan submitted to the authorities at the same time.
If it wasn't called Project X and later renamed Millennium Dam until it got its current name GERD, it remained a mystery of the Nile scandal until its declaration in 2011. Since then, billions have been collected by residents through various components.
GERD is located in the state of Benshiangul Gumuz, a place called Guba, 40 kilometers east of the border with Sudan and 500 kilometers northwest of the capital Addis Ababa. The dam, which is still under construction, accounts for about 65% of the expansion work. Following the launch of the Salini Impregillo and Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC), a state-of-the-art military combination, construction of the dam should be completed within five years. Currently, the agency has changed its schedule and the current dam is expected to be completed by 2022.
