Middle of Ethioinfo - Interview with the designer Birtukan Worku. The designer Birtukan responded to the controversy of the Gabi with theme of the Ethiopian flag. Gabi is a handmade cloth used by Eritreans and Ethiopes. It is used over the shoulders and upper body and is made of cotton. Unlike the two-layer kuta (used by men) and netla (used by women), it consists of four layers. Both men and women can use it. Most of the time, the elderly use it.
The netle has only two layers and is quite large, measuring around 63 x 102 inches. It is white with a colorful edge (TIBEB) between 1 to 2 inches at each end with two variations, one has only one color and the second can have many colors and patterns.
The netla can be used in different ways. For overall wear, netela covers the back and shoulders, and the border folds through the right shoulder, but for the activities of the Church, the two layers of netla are opened and the border passes through both shoulders. When the border is used around the face or shoulders, it is a sign of mourning, but for recreation or to rest the border above the left shoulder.
There are other textiles similar to netla. There is a photo called, which is much more colorful with a dimension of 58 x 105 inches. Usually, it has a chessboard design and is a medium weight textile that is used simply wrapped around the shoulders or on the head like a shawl.
