Recent analyses have revealed that the urban population is growing rapidly at a rate of 3.8% per annum and unemployment and poverty are both high, estimated at 23.5% and 22% respectively. In addition, the national food poverty head count index is 33.6% on average (34.7% rural and 27.9% in urban areas). As more of the urban poor live in large urban centers, expanding development programs to address key challenges to urban poverty reduction is imperative.
